International Grantmaking (USIG)
http://usig.org/index.asp is a project of the
Council on Foundations in partnership with the
International Center for Not-For-Profit Law. The USIG project
facilitates effective and responsible international grantmaking by U.S.
foundations.
What does the USIG
project do? The USIG Project explains complex legal requirements in
understandable terms by working toward revision of burdensome or
ambiguous IRS regulations governing giving abroad. The project also
compiles a database of legal information for 32 specific countries and
provides “model” materials for foundations to use with their overseas
grantees. The project provides access to best practices in the field
and links to other resources relevant to USIG’s mission.
USAID is an
independent federal government agency that receives overall foreign
policy guidance from the Secretary of State.
Our Work supports long-term and equitable economic growth and
advances U.S. foreign policy objectives by supporting: economic growth,
agriculture and trade; global health; and, democracy, conflict

Afghan Women's
Council
The AWC is located in Peshawar, Pakistan, and runs the Ariana School,
the Mother and Child Health Clinic in Peshawar, which provides education
and medical care to refugee families, and the Nazo AnaClinic, a 20-bed
hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, that kept its doors open throughout all
five years of the Taliban regime. AWC also manages humanitarian relief
efforts for newly-arrived refugees and publishes the monthly journal,
Zan-e-Afghan (Afghan Women) to mobilize women to bring peace and
stability to the country.

Afghan Women Welfare Department (AWWD)
The Afghan Women's Welfare Department (AWWD) provides educational and
income-generating training to both rural and urban refugee women. The
AWWD has training programs such as literacy and tailoring, English
language, computer programming and software, basic health education,
soap and candle making and embroidery training. AWWD pays special
attention to disabled women and to women whose spouses are disabled.

Afghan Women's Educational Centre (AWEC)
AWEC has expanded its services to include trauma counseling, medical
services and health education recently. The main purpose was to organize
the Afghan refugee-women scattered in and around Islamabad to a
well-knit organization and then to make the best political female NGO
that provides education and skill training to Afghan women. It assists
women to become aware of their rights and privileges and strives to
promote their emancipation.

Agenda: Empowering Women for Gender Equity The Agenda Feminist Media
Project consists of a journal, radio and writing programs, and
internships. The journal creates an important space for women to publish
their own work, and for women who have never had their work published to
do so. Agenda, working with 34 community radio stations, makes a
contribution to keeping women informed by providing weekly written
gender news. As an intern, one aspiring journalist has joined the Agenda
team to acquire hands-on experience in the media industry. The newly
introduced programme concentrates on mentoring 24 new writers in
analytical writing skills each year.
Writers and mentors develop lifelong skills and confidence that can be
used in all areas of their work.

REACH (Rural Expansion of
Afghanistan's Community-Based Healthcare) REACH continues technical
assistance, using both standardized and tailored approaches, to build
NGO capacity to deliver and expand quality health services and help them
develop the technical, managerial and leadership skills they need. REACH
has awarded $68 million in USAID-funded grants to 25 Afghan and
international NGOs to deliver the Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS),
the primary health care services selected by Afghanistan's Ministry of
Public Health as having the greatest impact on the country's major

Canadian Women for
Women in Afghanistan
The goals of CW4WAfghan are 1) to support the empowerment efforts of
women in Afghanistan and the refugee camps in Pakistan, and 2) to raise
awareness in Canada of the need to secure and protect human rights for
Afghan women. Projects are funded in a variety of ways including
individual donations, 'in-kind' support, and through financial
partnerships with donors such as Rights and Democracy in Montreal.
